Plus, there’s a lot to like too. I found the different kinds of demons and their little quirks charming, plus the Demonology treatise found at the end of the book was a nice touch. I liked reading about the magic school environment and the interactions Fletcher has with his fellow students, especially his relationship with the dwarf Othello and the elf Sylva. The tournament at the end definitely made for an entertaining closer as well, though I also can’t wait to finally step out of the academy setting into big wide world.
The kids have to learn quickly because an upcoming tournament will seal there places in the war effort. Outside of school, Fletcher gets caught up in a plot by nobles who want to start a war with the elves and corner the market on firearms.

I would recommend this for fans of Brandon Sanderson's The Rithmatist because the two of them definitely have a similar feel to them. For that, I can overlook some of the novel’s weaknesses, such as the simplistic writing style and on several occasions where it felt somewhat skewed towards younger audiences like Middle Grade. The writing is perhaps my only big issue I had with this novel, which I here felt could use a fair bit more polishing, but this is not an area I’m overly concerned with when I read YA.

There are some other characters in the book that I like and that you are going to hate naturally. I like one of their teachers Lovett. She is just too cool!
And there’s the whole grew of supporting characters ranging from awesome to mean to shady and then, just to round up the picture: a few characters about whom I haven’t made my mind up yet. And I have to admit, I love the demon idea. Of course they can be badass, but they are also portrayed very cutely, especially in their bonds to their owners.
